‘Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.’ 1 Sam 16:7 TM

King David wasn’t born with a crown on his head and a load of people around him waiting to peel him a grape! He was the youngest of eight brothers; they were good looking, trained fighters and much more obvious choices as potential king material. No way would anyone even take a look at some scrawny shepherd boy, with sheep poop between his toes and a sling over his shoulder but God saw deeper qualities that weren’t immediately obvious. His passionate and courageous heart made him God’s perfect candidate to rule over Israel. That meant it didn’t matter what other people thought; he was God’s choice for the job! When the prophet Samuel came to anoint David as king, God said to him, ‘Looks aren’t everything…God judges persons differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.’

You only have to pick up a magazine and it’s obvious that people are obsessed with image. The pressure to look perfect is pushed in our faces every time we turn on the TV. The fact is that God isn’t looking to see if you have the latest Gucci sunglasses or Armani jeans before He’ll pick you to be part of His group. He has hand picked you for a fantastic adventure and all He is bothered about is that your heart loves Him 100%. Before David was handed his crown he learnt how to be a happy being a shepherd and before anything else, to love God with his whole heart!
